Oh snap! How an NC State student plans to taunt UNC and Duke fans.

Scott Parnell just couldn’t resist using N.C. State’s wins over both Duke and North Carolina this season as a way to taunt Blue Devils and Tar Heels fans at their upcoming game.

Parnell, an N.C. State sophomore from Fayetteville majoring in communications and broadcasting, has purchased and designed a Snapchat filter that uses an image of first-year N.C. State basketball coach Kevin Keatts and the words “you both lost to NC State” for users of the social media app in the Smith Center and Chapel Hill area during the Duke-UNC game on Feb. 8.

Snapchat users would normally have a few UNC and Duke filters to swipe through at the game. They will also have Parnell’s filter showing Keatts with a caption saying “Remember Duke and UNC fans no matter what happens tonight … you both lost to NC State.” It also has a word balloon from Keatts saying, “Kevin Keatts is a winner.”

“It’s a little bit of modern warfare,” Parnell said.

Parnell saw a similar Snapchat filter for a Purdue-Indiana game and got to thinking.

“I just knew on Tobacco Road I could do better,” he said. “I could get Duke and Carolina in one swoop. Two for the price of one.”

The filter, which will run from 5 to 10 p.m. on Feb. 8, cost Parnell $15 and took 45 minutes to set up and for Snapchat to approve it.

Parnell, who grew up a Wake Forest fan, understands the Wolfpack’s disdain for the other Triangle schools.

With the Pack beating Duke 96-85 on Jan. 6 and then beating UNC 95-91 on Jan. 27 at the Smith Center, Parnell saw an excellent opportunity to relish the wins.

“As State fans we haven’t been there,” he said. “Let us have some fun.”

Does he have any regrets, especially since it has gone viral on social media?

“I already got my money’s worth,” he said. “Just seeing them get worked up was worth it.”

Parnell said that he will watch the game with friends somewhere in Chapel Hill just to be able to witness his handiwork.

“I’m going to relish it while I still can,” he said.
