One of Raleigh’s greatest diners, Finch’s Restaurant, was forced by construction on Capital Boulevard to move out of its Peace Street home – where it had been for seven decades.
On Friday, Nov. 17, it will make its return, this time in Durham.
Owner Peggy Jin said Finch’s will reopen at 3211 Old Chapel Hill Road in the former Family Garden plant store and greenhouse. She said it will be the same old Finch’s, a breakfast favorite famous for blueberry pancakes and omelets, but that it will add healthy options and outdoor seating. Some tables will be in the old Family Garden greenhouse, with some plants for sale.
“We were a popular greasy spoon; we’ll lose the grease and keep the spoon,” Jin said.
Finch’s, previously just a breakfast and lunch spot, will add dinner service at its new location, Jin said, and with that alcohol. The new Finch’s will take advantage of its former garden center space, she said, by growing some vegetables out back in the summer and many of the herbs it will use. There will also be outdoor seating.
“It’s just a totally different environment,” Jin said.
“A long time, they told us we’d have to move, but had been talking for years about that and nothing really coming from it,” Jin said. “Then we got that notice that we had to move. When we had a moving date set, it really hit me.”
The loss of Finch’s hit Raleigh, too, with regulars lamenting the loss of a place they had been frequenting for years. Jin said she hopes the regulars will follow Finch’s to Durham, but expects to build a new following. It sounds like there might already be one.
“A lot of people will still call asking when we’re going to reopen,” Jin said. “When the newspaper said we were closing and moving to Durham, I heard from someone there who said, ‘I’ll be there Day One when you open.’ I didn’t know him. It’s exciting.”
Jin expects breakfast to be the main draw at Finch’s and will serve it all day, but wanted to add dinner service and options like veggie and turkey burgers, as well as a full bar.
Finch’s will be open 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, staying open until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and then opening on Sunday from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
