Deputies sniffed out a drug crime near the entrance to the Chatham County Detention Center while a man was inside trying to bail out a family member, officials say.
The deputies were leaving a leadership training session Monday when they smelled “the overwhelming scent of marijuana radiating from a vehicle parked outside the front door of the facility,” the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said Friday in a news release.
Frederick Perry, 31, of 153 Burnett Circle in Pittsboro, was found in the vehicle with a “baggie” of marijuana, the report said.
In searching the vehicle, deputies also found 14 dosage units of THC oil inside a canvas bag belonging to John Keiser, according to the report. Keiser, 53, of 40 Davie Drive in Chapel Hill, was inside the office trying to post bond for a family member at the time deputies conducted the search, the report said.

Both men were charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The sheriff’s office said the men were issued written promises to appear in Chatham County District Court on Feb. 28.
