Downtown Durham is set for nearly 200 more apartment units as construction began Tuesday on the Solis Brightleaf apartment complex adjacent to Brightleaf Square.
The 194-unit apartment complex — located on the former Howerton-Bryan Funeral Home site — is expected to be completed in late 2018, according to the developer of the new complex, Terwilliger Pappas Multifamily Partners. Solis Brightleaf will also include a parking garage with more than 250 spaces.
The developer is also behind the Solis Ninth Street apartment complex in Durham, where rent for one-bedroom apartments begins at around $1,400 a month, according to its website.
Demolition of the Howerton-Bryan Funeral Home started on Tuesday. The funeral home was the longest continuously operated business in Durham, operating for 141 years until it closed in 2015. The funeral home property sold for more than $4 million, according to county records.
Never miss a local story.
Solis Brightleaf will have one-, two- and three-bedroom apartment units, according to Terwilliger Pappas.
Pittsburgh-based First National Bank is providing financing for Solis Brightleaf, and Clancy & Theys Construction Company is the general contractor. The design team includes Cline Design Architects and landscape architecture and engineering firm Stewart.
