Katrina Rose, an actress and singer from Durham, competed in a Battle Round on “The Voice” Monday, performing “W-O-M-A-N” by Etta James.

Rose, who is currently a kickboxing instructor in Queens, New York, was on Miley Cyrus’ team and sang against Janice Freeman.

Judge Blake Shelton told Rose if she wasn’t such a great singer she should join the “WWE” because of how hard she was “stomping a fire out” on the floor during her song.

“In 13 seasons of doing this show, I have never seen somebody so wrapped up in a moment as what you displayed for us right then,” Shelton said. “And because of that, I gotta see some more from Katrina.”

Judge Jennifer Hudson praised the high notes hit by Katrina and told her, “You sang your hair back to the back of your head.”

But the choice was ultimately up to Cyrus, and she picked Janice.

In her goodbyes, Rose told the judges how much she learned from her experience on the show, especially appreciating some advice from Miley and her dad Billy Ray Cyrus: “Live life like there is no box – and I’m done trying to fit in other peoples’ boxes.”

A steal!

The selection of Janice made Katrina available for a “steal” by another judge – and thanks to Jennifer Hudson, Rose will continue on the show. She’s now on Hudson’s team.

“Here at J-Hud Productions we don’t believe in limits or boxes,” Hudson told her.

Rose’s full audition wasn’t shown during the show’s Blind Audition rounds earlier this season. In Monday night’s episode she noted that she played the lead in “Hairspray” in Las Vegas ten years ago. Rose, whose full name is Katrina Rose Dideriksen, attended high school at the Durham School of the Arts.
